Once Wyatt had his clothes back on, he returned to the table as if we hadn’t just shared a seriously sensual moment. After refilling our wine glasses, he asked, “Truth or dare?”

It didn’t take me long to answer because I had no intention of going back out into the frigid night air. “Truth.”

He obviously already had a question in mind because he immediately asked, “So, did you really have an affair with your cousin?”

“Ugh, you know about that?” I let out a disgusted huff. Was this minor error in judgment going to follow me around forever?

When Wyatt merely nodded, I stood to take our plates to the sink. Staring out the window, so I wouldn’t have to face him as I spoke about it, I said, “First off, we aren’t related by blood. Jonah was already several years old when his father met my aunt.”

“Okay…” Wyatt said as he scraped the remaining sauce from the pan into a plastic container. I could tell by his tone that he was as uncertain about my relationship with Jonah as my family had been.

“We are merely cousins by marriage,” I defended the relationship again. When Wyatt didn’t comment further, I decided to go all in. “We never actually had sex, though.”

Wyatt stopped on his way to the fridge and turned to face me. It was obvious that he hadn’t been privy to this little tidbit of information. “No?” He prompted me to go on.

“No.” I confirmed. Feeling the need to justify our relationship further, I said, “Even though there wasn’t anything technically wrong with me dating Jonah, I couldn’t escape the feeling that it just wasn’t right. I seem to have a tendency to want men that I shouldn’t.”

I let my strong insinuation hang in the air between us. He appeared torn about whether he should acknowledge it. Deciding to let him off the hook, I said huskily, “Truth or dare?”

His eyes never left mine as he answered. “Truth.”

“What’s the story about the Tweety Bird tattoo on your shoulder?” I asked immediately. I’d been curious about the odd choice since I spied it during his near naked run outside. Knowing the silly cartoon bird was there definitely decreased his intimidation factor.

“There’s not much of a story… I had too much to drink and some buddies dared me to get it.” Turning to look intently into my eyes, he added, “I have a hard time resisting a good dare.”

My heart hammered in my chest as I realized that I could probably break down the walls he had erected to keep us apart with a mere dare.

His voice sounded even deeper than normal when he asked, “Truth or dare?”

I stared at him for a long moment, trying to decide what to do. My voice was barely above a whisper when I finally responded, “Truth.”

“Have you ever been in love?” The intent way he was staring at me, as if my answer was truly important to him, made me fidget.

“No.” I kept my answer simple, unwilling to admit that my confinement with him was stirring up confusing and unwanted feelings for him.
